The Origins of the Spring Cleaning Tradition

We are a couple of weeks into spring, and many minds are turning towards spring cleaning. Spring cleaning involves cleaning your home thoroughly, from top to bottom. It also helps to throw open your windows afterwards to let in the fresh spring air.

But why do we spring clean? Who started the tradition? There are several opinions.

Inefficient Heating

Before the modern era of efficient heating, spring cleaning made sense.  Homes were closed up tightly in the cold winter months and smelly, dirty fuels from the fireplace, coal burning stoves, and kerosene heaters, would cover everything in the house with smoke and soot. When spring came around the house could be opened up again and walls, woodwork and rugs were given a deep cleaning.

Fortunately today we have much cleaner choices for heating our homes so they do not get nearly as dirty during the colder months. Our homes get less dirty during this time because they are closed up! So because of that we believe Fall is the best time of year for a deep cleaning; the wonderful results will last longer!

Religious or Cultural Traditions

During the Jewish religious holiday of Passover, all traces of food made with yeast (leavened) must be removed from the home. In order to do so, observant Jews would thoroughly clean the house. The night before the Passover holiday, there would be a hunt for leavened bread (chametz) crumbs by candlelight.

It is part of Greek Orthodox tradition to thoroughly clean in the week before or during the first week of Lent. The cleaning would typically take an entire week.

The Persian New Year celebration (Nouroz) occurs at the beginning of Spring. Before Nouroz begins, Persian women traditionally “shake the house.” Called khooneh takouni, this thorough cleaning even involves cleaning the ceilings!

As part of the Chinese tradition, homes must be thoroughly cleaned before the beginning of the Chinese New Year. This cleaning includes throwing out broken household items, and might also include Feng Shui.

So while we may not know exactly why we spring clean – we do know one thing. It makes us feel good!

Want to experience the benefits of spring cleaning without the drudgery? Hire a professional cleaning service like Sponge & Sparkle to handle it for you.

Here’s feedback from a few customers.

Best Deep Cleaning In (Atlanta)

Raina and her crew do a fantastic job. I just knew when I spoke to her that I was working with a pro and they delivered in a big way. My house is not just clean. It sparkles! I would recommend these folks to anyone who seriously wants their house clean. They are the best from start to finish.

Cleaned Every Nook & Cranny

Walking into my house after Sponge & Sparkle had cleaned it was fantastic! They cleaned every nook and cranny, steamed the cabinets, got the cobwebs from our vaulted ceilings – even set my daughters doll on a pillow with a blanket. These folks care about what they do and it shows! They do a fantastic job, are reliable, honest and a pleasure to work with. My house was a mess and they fixed it!

Atlanta Spring Cleaning Checklist – Bedrooms

Posted on April 10, 2013. Filed under: Cleaning Bedroom, Household Tips | Tags: , |

A Clean Bedroom = A Great Night's SleepNothing aids a good, restful night of sleep like having a clean, quiet, clutter-free bedroom.  (Not to mention, if you’ve been working along with our Atlanta Spring Cleaning Room by Room series you are overdue for a nap!)

Before I share the bedroom cleaning checklist, may I make a suggestion? Why don’t you spend  your time doing something you enjoy, and leave us to handle what we enjoy – making Atlanta homes sparkle! As our client Gregory says:

Our Loft Always Looks Brand New

We’re really happy we went with Sponge and Sparkle. The cleaners Mabia and Jared are fast but very thorough, and are always on time. We have a converted loft that gets dingy and dusty very easily, and it always looks and feels brand new after they’ve cleaned. Highly recommended.

Atlanta Spring Cleaning Checklist – Bathrooms

Posted on March 27, 2013. Filed under: Bathroom Cleaning Tips, Household Tips | Tags: , , |

bathroom cleaning AtlantaIn this installment of our Atlanta Spring Cleaning Room by Room series, we tackle the bathroom. Yes, the bathroom – where soap scum, stained grout, and the pernicious boy bathroom smell live.

Although the benefits of a clean home are outstanding, spring cleaning can be a tedious, time-consuming task. That’s why I suggest tackling one room at a time – perhaps an area each weekend.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest the best way to savor the benefits of a spring-cleaned home without the work – hire a professional maid service! Here’s what one of our clients had to say:

The Best Cleaning I’ve Had in 15 Years

Sponge and Sparkle was recommended to me by my Sister in law. She loves them and I see why! I needed above and beyond the average type of cleaning. Sponge and Sparkle came through beautifully. They cleaned everything everywhere! I have 3 kids, 2 large dogs, and a long haired cat. It was not an easy job! For me it was the best cleaning job I have ever had and I have used housekeepers for 15 years! I am going to continue to use them as my house remains on the market. They’re an asset now I would never let them go! I would recommend them to anyone!…

Bathroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

  • Clean the mirrors.
  • Scrub the inside and outside of toilets. Remove decorative covering(s) while cleaning.
  • Clean the shower and tub, including the tile and grout.
  • Wash the bathroom floors.
  • Wash bath rugs.
  • Scrub all sinks, including drains.
  • Clean countertops, removing and wiping down all items.

Spring Cleaning Ahead? We Can HelpWant to experience an emotional boost? Want to savor the experience of having a weight lifted off your shoulders? Well, a good, thorough spring cleaning is the answer.

Here’s the downside – spring cleaning takes time. Unless you have a long block of time to dedicate to the process, you are better off attacking one room at a time.  Over the next several weeks, I’ll share checklists to help you get your spring cleaning done – one room at a time.  This blog post focuses on the kitchen.

Of course, if you’d rather be somewhere else, consider hiring a professional house cleaning service. To read what we include in our Atlanta detail cleaning services, click here.

Kitchen

  • De-clutter first, getting rid of any dishes and utensils you are no longer using. Use this mantra as a guide: “have nothing in your home that you do not believe to be either beautiful or useful.”
  • Before replacing items in the cabinets, clean the shelves and drawers.
  • Wash down all kitchen appliance exteriors and counter tops.
  • Clean the inside of your microwave.
  • Scour the sink, including the drains.
  • Wipe down cabinet fronts.
  • Move appliances to clean the floor underneath.
  • Mop the floors.

So you want to do your own “spring clean?”

Posted on June 1, 2011. Filed under: Household Tips, Time Management | Tags: |

Want to do your spring cleaning yourself? Get the kids involved. The easiest way to spring clean,  in my opinion,  is of course to hire Sponge & Sparkle!  However, if you decide to do it yourself,  here are some  useful pointers:

  • Simplify your cleaning products.  You don’t need a specific cleaner for each  task, and there are many great green cleaning products  available now.
  • Organize your supplies to save time. Have a caddy  with all your supplies in one easy to carry tray and be sure to include a long duster, lots of clean cloths, and a toilet brush.
  • Work with a purpose. Work like we do – top to bottom, left to right, no backtracking.
  • Add some fun!
    • Get the whole family involved and  look on this as an opportunity to bond and have some fun (yes I said fun), exercise  and get a lot accomplished in the process.
    • Music is a must!  It not only helps you work faster, it makes the time fly by.

Once your home is clean, be sure to take time and appreciate your accomplishments!

Spring Cleaning? Do This First.

Posted on May 18, 2011. Filed under: Household Tips | Tags: |

Tips for spring cleaning in Atlanta, GASpring is such a beautiful time of year; time for new and fresh beginnings in every area of life as we mirror Mother Natures rebirth!  The perennial spring flowers are starting to bloom, the stores are selling new plantings, we  open up our windows, and we renew our determination to look great in a swimsuit.   This is the natural time to shape up both our bodies and our homes,  and make our homes healthier and fresher places to spend our time.

You may be asking, if I faithfully clean my house every week or every other week do I still need to do spring cleaning?  Almost without exception, the answer is yes.   The good news is that your spring cleaning tasks will probably take much less time than the sporadic cleaner.

A good place to begin is with what I think of  as the essential PRECLEAN.    This consists in simplifying all our “stuff”.   Work by one of my favorite maxims,  which is “have nothing in your home which is neither useful or beautiful.”    Just look around your space at all  your things with this in mind!  Things will naturally evolve into different categories for garbage,  charity, selling,  or keeping.    Only after this  step,  will you be ready to actually clean.

If you need direction or help with this  important first step, there are many good professional organizers,  and on our staff here at Sponge & Sparkle we have one of the best!   The cost is very reasonable and definitely worth it.
