boy washing hands in bathroom

Do you have boys? If you do, you know this is true – even when your bathroom is sparkling clean, the “boy bathroom smell” will linger. Mopping is not enough. You need to eliminate the odor.

Anna Mosely’s blog offers a recipe for getting rid of the boy bathroom smell, once and for all.

There are 3 reasons I like this article.

  • It’s simple. With only 3 ingredients and 3 steps, this is an easy recipe to implement.
  • It’s green. At Sponge & Sparkle, we are committed to using non-toxic cleaning products whenever possible. Vinegar, baking soda, lemon juice – that’s all this cleaning recipe requires.
  • It’s frugal. The ingredients shouldn’t cost you more than $3.

Too Funky in Here? How to Get Rid of Home Odors – Naturally

Posted on August 13, 2015. Filed under: Bathroom Cleaning Tips, Kitchen Cleaning | Tags: , , , , |

skunk sells perfumes

Did you know that the air inside your home can be much more polluted than the air outside, even if you change your air filters  And chemical air fresheners only mask odors but do not eliminate them, and might be bad for your health.

Several natural odor-eaters, such as white vinegar, baking soda, and coffee, will do the trick.  These everyday products don’t just hide bad smells, they actually neutralize them. Not only are they inexpensive and environmentally friendly, but they really do work.

If your house is persistently funky-smelling, first consider getting a thorough cleaning by a professional company. Make sure they use green and non-toxic cleaners rather than harsh chemicals such as bleach and ammonia.

After, that, here are a few tips for maintaining an odor-free home:

  • Routinely clean the garbage can with white vinegar and water. Then place about a tablespoon of coffee, a few cloves, and a tablespoon of baking soda in the center of a coffee filter or a piece of cheese cloth. Close with a twist tie to make a sachet, and put it at the bottom of the can to eliminate unpleasant odors.
  • Keep the garbage disposal clean. Insert the sink stopper, fill with a few inches of hot water, add about 2 tablespoons of baking soda, turn on the disposal and immediately pull out the stopper.
  • Keep the bathrooms fresh. Make your own non-toxic air freshener. Combine 2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda, and about 10 drops of essential oil (your favorite scent) and put in a spray bottle to keep handy in the bathroom.

There’s no need to spend money on air fresheners or perfumed cleaning products when you can keep your home fresh and clean using inexpensive, natural, non-toxic products. Vinegar and baking soda will defeat the funkiest odors. Try them—you’ll be glad!

What our Customers Say

Friendly and Efficient

I always love to come home after they’ve been here cleaning. They use natural products that smell good and get the job done.

Very thorough

Camille did a great job cleaning our house in Decatur last week! Everything looked and smelled terrific!

Love the Service

My friend told me about her neighbor’s business and I jumped at the chance to find someone to clean my house. So every other week, two very nice, polite ladies come and keep my house in shape. My floors are clean, things get dusted and my sink and bathtub do’sparkle’. I feel safe leaving the house while they are there and feel like the cats will still be inside when I get back. The thing I like most is the clean smell that lingers after they leave and that they use organic products. But they will use my products if I ask. I would recommend a detail cleaning first, even if your house is cleaner than mine. I only have them come every other week but hope to have them weekly in the future. I am getting used to a clean house. I don’t have to worry about paying taxes or anything except paying a set fee. That’s great as well.

Use Vinegar to Clean Your Bathroom and Save Money Too

Posted on April 2, 2015. Filed under: Cleaning Bedroom, Green Cleaning | Tags: , , , |

White vinegar is a natural, inexpensive, and highly effective cleaning and sanitizing agent.  It’s widely available in gallon size jugs in supermarkets and big box stores. The following are among the many ways it can be used to make your bathroom sparkle:

Clean modern bathroom - Atlanta house cleaning blog

  1. Floors: Dilute ¼ cup of white vinegar in a bucket of warm water to clean any type of floor except marble or wood.
  1. Mold or soap scum on walls and shower curtains: Apply white vinegar with a sprayer and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Rinse and let dry.
  1. Shower heads: Pour vinegar into a bag and use rubber bands to tie the bag over the shower head, or remove the shower head.  Let it soak overnight, and rinse.
  1. Windows and mirrors: Mix ¼ cup of vinegar with a tablespoon of Castile soap and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle. Spray windows and mirrors and wipe with a sheet of newspaper.
  1. Unclog and deodorize drains: The combination of vinegar and baking soda is one of the most effective ways to unclog and deodorize drains. It’s also far gentler on your pipes (and your wallet) than commercial drain cleaners. Use a funnel to pour 1/2 cup baking soda followed by 1 cup vinegar into the drain. When the foaming subsides, flush with hot water. Wait five minutes, and then flush again with cold water. Besides clearing blockages, this technique also washes away odor-causing bacteria.

Why use harsh, expensive chemical products when vinegar can do the same job?  You’ll soon discover many additional uses for this natural, non-toxic cleaning agent that saves money and helps to protect the environment.

6 Tips for a Clean Bathroom – Fast!

Posted on March 26, 2015. Filed under: Bathroom Cleaning Tips | Tags: , |

The bathroom. The home of messy spills, dried  on toothpaste, scum attracting showers, the pernicious boy bathroom smell and much more. It’s also the room your visitors are likely to spend the most time inspecting. (Did you know 40% of people admit to snooping in medicine cabinets?)

Clean modern bathroom - Atlanta house cleaning blog

Here are a few ideas for not only getting your bathroom clean quickly, but also keeping it that way.

  1. Keep your Counters Clear
Soap-scum, toothpaste goop and all matters of gunk can accumulate in nooks and crannies in the bathroom. The way to get around this is to prevent it in the first place by keeping your counter tops clear. Cleaning is a lot quicker if you do not have to move items around in order to clean.
  2. Do a Daily Wipe Down
As you finish your shower, get in the habit of giving every surface a quick wipe down. It takes less than a minute and leaves your bathroom cleaner over the long term.
  3. Collect your Supplies
One of the biggest time wasters is having to search for items when it is time to clean. Save yourself the trouble by collecting all of your bathroom cleaning supplies and tools before you get started.
  4. Work from Top to Bottom, Corner to Corner
Eliminate the need to backtrack to clean an area more than once by working from top to bottom.
  5. Spray the Tough Areas
If possible, spray the areas that need a little bit of  “elbow grease” first. As you work in other areas, you will give the cleaning products time to work on stains. Read the instructions to make sure you don’t let the products “sit” beyond the recommended time.
  6. The Quickest Route to a Clean Bathroom
Last but not least – the quickest way to get your bathroom clean is to hire a professional Atlanta maid service.  A professional service has the expertise, tools and equipment to get all of the nooks, crevices and crannies cleaned. Having a service come in two or three times a month keeps the mess at bay. Here are some reviews from our long-term customers.

Atlanta Spring Cleaning Checklist – Bathrooms

Posted on March 27, 2013. Filed under: Bathroom Cleaning Tips, Household Tips | Tags: , , |

bathroom cleaning AtlantaIn this installment of our Atlanta Spring Cleaning Room by Room series, we tackle the bathroom. Yes, the bathroom – where soap scum, stained grout, and the pernicious boy bathroom smell live.

Although the benefits of a clean home are outstanding, spring cleaning can be a tedious, time-consuming task. That’s why I suggest tackling one room at a time – perhaps an area each weekend.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn’t suggest the best way to savor the benefits of a spring-cleaned home without the work – hire a professional maid service! Here’s what one of our clients had to say:

The Best Cleaning I’ve Had in 15 Years

Sponge and Sparkle was recommended to me by my Sister in law. She loves them and I see why! I needed above and beyond the average type of cleaning. Sponge and Sparkle came through beautifully. They cleaned everything everywhere! I have 3 kids, 2 large dogs, and a long haired cat. It was not an easy job! For me it was the best cleaning job I have ever had and I have used housekeepers for 15 years! I am going to continue to use them as my house remains on the market. They’re an asset now I would never let them go! I would recommend them to anyone!…

Bathroom Spring Cleaning Checklist

Drain Cleaning – 2 Easy (and Green!) Recipes

Posted on August 30, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , |

Clog-free drainHair, soap scum, goo. Just a few things that can build up in your sink, causing your drains to empty slowly, giving you something else to contend with during your bathroom cleaning ritual.

An Ounce of Prevention

Before sharing a few easy drain cleaning tips, let’s discuss prevention. Have you considered an inexpensive drain strainer? This may help keep hair and some other items out of your drains, which reduces the number of times you have to unclog.

Drain Cleaning Recipe 1

Drop a couple of Alka Seltzer tablets into a slow drain and follow with a vinegar chaser. After a few minutes, rinse with hot water. Your drain will be as good as new.

Drain Cleaning Recipe 2

Would you like another bathroom cleaning tip?  Baking soda will not only clear up clogged drains, but it will also keep them smelling fresh. Try this: pour a half cup of salt and one cup of baking soda down the drain and let it sit overnight. In the morning chase it with a pot (two to three cups) of boiling water.

You will get the best results if you do not wait until your drain is clogged to use these cleaning recipes. Instead use them periodically to stop obstructions from piling up.
