Smog Alert!

We all know of the importance of breathing clean air and the effect that pollution has on our health and environment, but we rarely consider the quality of the air where we typically spend the most time: INDOORS!  According to the EPA, “indoor levels of pollutants may be 2 to 5 times- and occasionally more than 100 times- higher than outdoor pollution levels.”  Yikes!

Fortunately, Sheryl Eisenberg of This Green Life has some great tips for reducing indoor air pollution in our homes and workplaces:

1.  Regular thorough cleanings rid your home of dust, which contains many biological and chemical pollutants that can easily become airborne or ingested through hand-to-mouth contact.  Eisenberg recommends vacuuming with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter, using a wet mop, leaving shoes at the door, and sealing cracks to keep dust down in the first place.

2.  Use green household and personal care products!  Don’t contaminate your home (or body) with the toxic chemicals that can be found in many conventional products, including cosmetics, haircare, and air fresheners.  Sponge & Sparkle uses exclusively green products in your home, so you can be sure that fresh clean smell is safe to breathe in!

3.  Prevent mold by keeping humidity in your home to 50% or less, fixing leaks, and ventilating appliances properly.  Don’t let water accumulate anywhere, as it can be a breeding ground for mold and all of the dangerous health effects that come with it.

4.  Test for radon and get your fuel-burning appliances inspected every year to avoid the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

5.  Don’t allow smoking indoors!  (This one should be a no-brainer).

(More great tips and information can be found on the This Green Life blog at http://www.nrdc.org/thisgreenlife)

It’s up to you to make sure the air quality inside your home is safe and non-toxic, but you don’t have to do the job all on your own.  Let Sponge & Sparkle help you!  Schedule a cleaning today, then take a deep breath and enjoy your beautiful, HEALTHY home!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month – Free Cleanings for Cancer Patients

Posted on October 25, 2013. Filed under: Uncategorized |

by Raina Raflo, Founder, Sponge & Sparkle – Atlanta House Cleaning Experts

As we come to the end of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I would like to remind you of our free home cleanings for women undergoing cancer treatment.

We are part of Cleaning For A Reason www.cleaningforareason.org – a national non-profit foundation of cleaning services that want to give back to their community by helping women feel better.

When women are sick and they can’t take care of their home they way they have in the past, it is just another overwhelming, depressing thing.

How it Works

Once a patient calls the Cleaning for a Reason foundation, they will verify her eligibility and put her in touch with a professional house cleaning service provider in her area.

The number of cleanings varies by provider; we typically give each recipient 4 cleanings of 2 hours each with 2 people.

If you know of a woman who could benefit from this, please tell her about the C4R website.

Make a Difference – Buy From a Small Business

Posted on August 7, 2013. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: |

thank you for supporting small business

Do you feel that corporations have too much power and control over our country? I know that I do.  I prefer to give my money to the independent small businessperson over a giant mega-corporation.

As this graphic states, when you support small businesses, you are directly promoting the good of your community by giving jobs to hard-working people, and enabling prosperity at the grass roots level.

How many small businesses will you support this month?

Challenge yourself to support as many as you can, and please share your comment below.

Pithy Quotes!

Posted on November 7, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized |

I just found this quote by Jane Austen:  “Ah! There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort”.

Jane, who never ventured far from her home, should know about this.  Our home is our sacred refuge from the world and it’s crazyness.  It is where we go to completely be ourselves, so most of us enjoy making our home environment a reflection of us.  We love to  furnish it  just the way we like it, with all our special things that we love to look at and enjoy, and we certainly feel comfort from this.

A key part of feeling this comfort in our home is to also enjoy the cleanliness and order which is crucial to a serene  environment.  If our home is dirty and messy,  we certainly cannot enjoy it because the feeling nags at our conciousness that we need to get up  and clean!

Or even if that feeling can be numbed,  it is still there in the recesses of our minds compromising our happiness in our home because there is a small feeling of stress around  unmet obligations.

If you have unmet obligations with your home, and no time to clean, then call Sponge & Sparkle,  an Atlanta housecleaning service.

Women, Time and Housework

Posted on September 25, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , |

SuperMom Action Figure - the transformationYou are not alone if you feel like you never have enough time.

  • Half of American women feel they don’t have enough free time.
  • 52%  of women have less than 90 minutes of free time a day, and
  • 29% have less than 45 minutes a day.

Of the free time that we have, 46% say they are often interrupted.

Since 16% of our time goes to household chores,  the demand for professional home cleaning services  is growing each  year as women begin to realize that it only makes sense to outsource  the tasks that  will free up their time and make for a better quality of life.

(Source: Real Simple magazine and the Families And Work Institute asked 3,230 American women ages 25 to 54 about the who, what, when, and why concerning their time.)

Please join the conversation

How much free time do you have each day? What do you do to maximize your free time? Please share your comments below.

Work, Work and More Work? We All Need Time to Relax!

Posted on September 16, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , |

Relaxing In Front Of The FireWe all need time to relax, and chores are getting in the way!

In a  study published in 2011, sociologists followed 30 couples (all of whom worked more than 30 hours a week)  tracking their  activities every 10 minutes and taking saliva samples to measure stress.

The study found both women and men who devoted  the most time to housework had higher levels of evening cortisol  (commonly known as the “stress” hormone).

Why?  Because housework is … work so it is more likely to keep your cortisol spiked than doing something that is calming.

“Our bodies need to recover physiologically after work,” says Darby Saxbe, one of the  co-authors of  the study at the University of Southern California.

“These couples were returning to homes where dinner needed to be cooked, laundry needed washing and folding, etc,  and instead of unwinding, these couples took on more work.”

In Atlanta, busy professional people know they can trust Sponge & Sparkle to  care for their homes with skill and dependability and relieve them of high stress levels!

Now that Summer is officially here, I hope you are enjoying it.  If I am ever tempted to complain of the heat, I just remember what Mr. February is like!

Regarding climate, here   is another quote by the ever quotable John Ruskin:  “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating.  There is really no such thing as bad weather, only  different kinds of good weather”

So don’t spend your weekends cleaning.  You should be enjoying this beauty while it’s here.  Just  call Sponge & Sparkle  to take over the cleaning!

What is Real Service?

Posted on June 10, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized |

I found this quote by the venerable John Ruskin, that I just love:

“When love and skill work together, expect a miracle”.

One of the reasons that it speaks to me, is that a clean sparkly home is a small miracle.  At Sponge & Sparkle, I see this every day.    To clean professionally is a real skill that we teach to all our new technicians.  But there has to be something else in the mix for that extra dash of magic, and it is, I think, an attitude of service.  It means to put one’s best effort into the job and to   give of one’s self – which is  to express love in our work, and to all that we come into contact with in the course of this job.  To practice the Golden Rule, to be in the flow, to be with  the zen, may not happen every time, but it happens a lot here.

When we leave a home, that we have cleaned beautifully, we leave a little bit of ourselves behind.  We have made a huge difference in someone’s life, and it feels good to us.  That is  real service.
