Complimentary House Cleanings for Atlanta Heroes | Sponge & Sparkle, Inc.

Posted on November 28, 2012. Filed under: About Sponge & Sparkle | Tags: , |

As of November 2012, over 50,000 soldiers have been wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Some have disabling injuries which make it difficult for them to perform everyday tasks such as cleaning and maintaining their homes.

No Cost Home Cleanings for Disabled Veterans

In addition, there are hundreds of thousands of veterans from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War with disabling injuries. Having house cleaning help may make it possible for elderly veterans to stay in their homes longer, rather than being forced to move to a retirement community.

Sponge and Sparkle recently partnered with the Cleaning for Heroes foundation to honor veterans and service members. Through our partnership, we will provide house cleaning services, at no cost, to disabled and/or elderly members of the United States military, Atlanta police departments and fire departments.

Cleaning for Heroes is the only non-profit in the country coordinating cleaning companies willing to donate services with the veterans who need them. To get started, simply contact Cleaning for Heroes. The foundation will verify eligibility and match you with a participating cleaning service in your area.

As Shirley Chisholm so eloquently said: “Service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth.”  We are grateful for the opportunity to serve those who have so selflessly and courageously served our country.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted on November 21, 2012. Filed under: About Sponge & Sparkle | Tags: , , |

Happy Thanksgiving - why are you grateful?

What are YOU grateful for this year?  The practice of gratitude is a powerful thing, and just makes all the good already in our life blossom and flourish more.

We have so many wonderful clients who tell us how grateful they are for us – and we are so grateful for THEM!  It is a joy to have this business and have such – great clients and employees.

Just one more thing to be grateful for  – a big thing to be grateful for surely, but it is all the minutia of our daily life that we can give silent thanks for in each hour.  A warm bed, a car that runs, a car!, a coat, hot water, coffee, smiles…..we all have a never ending list if we pay attention.

I love this quote from G. K. Chesterton, which illustrates the practice of just breathing in and out gratitude in all that we do every day:

“You say grace before meals. All right. But I say grace before the concert and the opera, and grace before the play and pantomime, and grace before I open a book, and grace before sketching, painting, swimming, fencing, boxing, walking, playing, dancing and grace before I dip the pen in the ink.”

Posted on November 15, 2012. Filed under: About Sponge & Sparkle | Tags: , |

What are you grateful for in your life?  I love this holiday  –  taking time to ceremoniously gather together and express our gratitude for the blessing in our lives.

I, of course, am always grateful every day for family, friends, sustenance,  hot water,  etc.

Today I am thinking of the blessing of having this business.  Sponge & Sparkle  has provided not just income for myself and many others, but has been a source of happiness, friendships,  and a focal point for my life.   I know that cleaning is SO important and the framework around which so much in life hangs.

I am also so grateful to be living in a free country where I have to opportunity to start a business from nothing, and to grow it and prosper it for over 30 years, with the help and support of many amazing people  – our office manager Cindy, our hardworking staff,  our generous customers, and  even  my associates in all my professional organizations.

Thank you USA, and our free enterprise system for making all this possible.

So, what are you grateful for? Share your comments below.

Having a Thanksgiving Gathering? Here’s your Checklist.

Posted on November 10, 2012. Filed under: Entertaining Tips, Kitchen Cleaning | Tags: |

When you are preparing for a festive gathering such as Thanksgiving dinner, the key to stress-free entertaining is preparation.

Our checklist gives you a few things to do over the next two weeks, so that entertaining isn’t an overwhelming task. Follow our checklist and get ready to enjoy the festivities along with your guests.

2 weeks before

  1. Shop for your non-perishables.Buy everything that you do not need to purchase fresh. This can include canned goods, beverages, spices, and decorations. Shopping 2-3 weeks also has the added benefit of helping you avoid the crowds. Tip – clear space in the your pantry and refrigerator before you go shopping so that you have somewhere to store your items.
  2. Buy your decorations.
  3. Schedule your deep house cleaning. The best time to have your cleaning service perform a detail cleaning is the week before Thanksgiving. It stands to reason that this week is also the busiest time for home cleaning services. Make your appointment now to reserve your space on the schedule.

1 week before

  1. Clean your home.A week before is the best time to clean the home from top to bottom. If you’ve scheduled an appointment with a house cleaning service, this is a task you can easily check off your list. If you haven’t, get your supplies and block off several hours.
  2. Prepare your food. Are there any dishes (or portions of dishes) that you can prepare and freeze ahead of time? Go ahead and get those out of the way.
  3. Polish your silver, and wash the fine china. While you are getting your home cleaned, go ahead and clean your silverware and fine china. Better yet, have your teenagers handle this task.

1 to 3 Days before.

  1. Decorate. If you do not have small children, you can probably set up your decorations several days to a week in advance.
  2. Set up your dining room.Get your table and service areas as close to ready as you can. This provides another opportunity for you to make certain you have enough serving dishes and utensils.
  3. Shop for fresh items.Buy flowers, vegetables or fruit.
  4. Walk-through.The night before, walk through the areas your guests will be visiting to see if there is anything that needs to be cleaned or repaired.

The Night Before

  1. Prepare the food. This is probably when you will be preparing most of your dinner. Our tips will help you keep your kitchen clean while you are cooking.

Before your guests arrive.

  1. Prepare your last minute dishes, making sure to keep your kitchen clean as you do.
  2. Do a last minute walk-through.
  3. Relax, and get ready to enjoy your guests.

I hope this checklist comes in handy as you prepare for Thanksgiving entertaining. Feel free to comment and share your entertaining tips.

What are your secrets for a stress-free gathering?

Pithy Quotes!

Posted on November 7, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized |

I just found this quote by Jane Austen:  “Ah! There is nothing like staying at home for real comfort”.

Jane, who never ventured far from her home, should know about this.  Our home is our sacred refuge from the world and it’s crazyness.  It is where we go to completely be ourselves, so most of us enjoy making our home environment a reflection of us.  We love to  furnish it  just the way we like it, with all our special things that we love to look at and enjoy, and we certainly feel comfort from this.

A key part of feeling this comfort in our home is to also enjoy the cleanliness and order which is crucial to a serene  environment.  If our home is dirty and messy,  we certainly cannot enjoy it because the feeling nags at our conciousness that we need to get up  and clean!

Or even if that feeling can be numbed,  it is still there in the recesses of our minds compromising our happiness in our home because there is a small feeling of stress around  unmet obligations.

If you have unmet obligations with your home, and no time to clean, then call Sponge & Sparkle,  an Atlanta housecleaning service.
