Free Cleaning Services for Cancer Patients

Posted on September 30, 2012. Filed under: About Sponge & Sparkle | Tags: |

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In relation to this, we thought you’d like to know about a service Sponge & Sparkle provides, in case you have a friend who is undergoing cancer treatment.

We provide free home cleanings for women undergoing treatment for cancer.  We are part of Cleaning For A Reason www.cleaningforareason.org  – a national non-profit foundation of cleaning services that want to give back to their community by helping women feel better.

When women are sick and they can’t  take care of their home they way they  have in the past,  it is just another overwhelming, depressing thing.

How it Works

Once a patient calls the Cleaning for a Reason foundation, they will verify her eligibility and put her in touch with a professional house cleaning service provider in her area.

The number of cleanings varies by provider; we typically give each recipient 4 cleanings of 2 hours each with 2 people.

If you know of  a woman who could benefit from this, please tell her about  the C4R  website.

Women, Time and Housework

Posted on September 25, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , |

SuperMom Action Figure - the transformationYou are not alone if you feel like you never have enough time.

  • Half of American women feel they don’t have enough free time.
  • 52%  of women have less than 90 minutes of free time a day, and
  • 29% have less than 45 minutes a day.

Of the free time that we have, 46% say they are often interrupted.

Since 16% of our time goes to household chores,  the demand for professional home cleaning services  is growing each  year as women begin to realize that it only makes sense to outsource  the tasks that  will free up their time and make for a better quality of life.

(Source: Real Simple magazine and the Families And Work Institute asked 3,230 American women ages 25 to 54 about the who, what, when, and why concerning their time.)

Work, Work and More Work? We All Need Time to Relax!

Posted on September 16, 2012. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , |

Relaxing In Front Of The FireWe all need time to relax, and chores are getting in the way!

In a  study published in 2011, sociologists followed 30 couples (all of whom worked more than 30 hours a week)  tracking their  activities every 10 minutes and taking saliva samples to measure stress.

The study found both women and men who devoted  the most time to housework had higher levels of evening cortisol  (commonly known as the “stress” hormone).

Why?  Because housework is … work so it is more likely to keep your cortisol spiked than doing something that is calming.

“Our bodies need to recover physiologically after work,” says Darby Saxbe, one of the  co-authors of  the study at the University of Southern California.

“These couples were returning to homes where dinner needed to be cooked, laundry needed washing and folding, etc,  and instead of unwinding, these couples took on more work.”

In Atlanta, busy professional people know they can trust Sponge & Sparkle to  care for their homes with skill and dependability and relieve them of high stress levels!

8 Ways to Cut Your Housecleaning Time in Half

Posted on September 7, 2012. Filed under: Cleaning Bedroom, Household Tips, Kitchen Cleaning | Tags: |

A clean house is a sign of a broken computer. When is the last time you read a book from cover to cover?

Are you a frustrated artist who never seems to find the time to create?

Have you been thinking about starting a home business?

You can do any and all of these things with your free time.

A study by CLR revealed that Americans spend 13 hours a week cleaning. That’s 685 hours a year – almost an entire month! At least half of that time could be transformed into a dozen books read, half a dozen masterpieces painted, or a few thousand dollars in your pocket.

These tips will help you make better use of the time you spend cleaning.

Start With a Clean Slate

Sometimes it is hard to get the house to a point where you feel you can maintain it.  Hire a cleaning service to do a thorough detailed house cleaning, so that it will be easier for you to maintain a clean home. A professional service can get your home in tip-top shape in no time, leaving you to maintain the clean.

Keep Your Cleaning Products Close

Put your cleaning products where they will be needed the most. This will save you from running from room to room looking for them.  Put one or two bottles of green cleaning products in each room for easy access. Instead of items up and down the stairs, keep a broom on each floor. For items you need to use in each room, use a little cleaning tool belt or perhaps an apron with pockets to keep them on you.

Invest in Time Saving Equipment

A steam cleaner like the ones used by professional cleaning services will speed up your cleaning and scrubbing time significantly. A high quality lightweight vacuum will also make cleaning go faster as you can vacuum more surfaces.

Avoid Distractions

Five minute email breaks can end up lasting an hour.  You can tweet that you are cleaning after you finish doing it.

If you really need human contact when you are cleaning, call someone and use a hands-free headset.  You’d be surprised how much laundry you can fold during a half-hour phone conversation.

Work from One End to the Other

Don’t run around in circles picking up items here and there.  You will only exhaust yourself.

Instead, work from one corner of the room to the other. Have a garbage bag and basket for things to put away. Put items that don’t belong into the basket as you encounter them, and take other items out of the basket as you reach the space where they should be.

Go Clubbing

Just as faster tempo music makes people exercise faster, having your favorite up-tempo tunes playing in the background may speed up your cleaning.

Dancing a little may also help: just make sure your kids and their smartphones are nowhere nearby. You wouldn’t want to end up on youtube.

Assert your Authority

Speaking of idle kids, put them to work! Assign tasks to each child and give rewards for jobs well done. An added benefit is that they won’t be underfoot, so that you can clean and dance in peace.

Fuhgeddaboudit

Is all of this cleaning worth a month (each year) out of your life?

If you’ve decided it’s not worth the time, energy, and stress, if you’d rather spend that time doing something that brings you joy, Fuhgeddaboudit and hire a professional cleaning service.
