Spring Clean Like the Professionals

Posted on April 25, 2011. Filed under: Household Tips | Tags: |

When we do a top to bottom detail cleaning, we have to be very organized and systematic because we don’t want to miss anything, and we want to make the best use of our time since we charge  our clients by the hour.

Here are some rules that we follow:

  • We always work from top to bottom, one side to the other.
  • We use two hands – one to pick up and move things with, and the other to clean with.
  • We always wear an apron with big pockets for cleaning towels, etc and we always carry our supplies in a cleaning caddy and keep it right with us as we clean.
  • We start upstairs and finish it completely and then go downstairs,  allowing  gravity to work  with us and trying never to backtrack.

In tackling  areas such as bathroom and kitchen counter-tops  and baseboards,  we spray the all purpose cleaner first over the entire surface and let it sit for a few minutes to more easily dislodge the grime.

On granite counter-tops we like to use microfiber to help get rid of the gritty feeling that granite can sometimes have.  Microfiber is made up of hundreds of  extremely tiny loops that grab onto the dirt particles and hold them.  Our jumbo mop also uses a microfiber pad.   Instead of  sweeping,  we use a Mity Mite canister vacuum on all the hard surface floors before mopping  which  is really effective,  especially with pet hair.

These are simple rules that  you can easily adopt in your own cleaning forays if you opt to do it yourself.  Or just call us –  Sponge & Sparkle, Atlanta’s premier house cleaning service.

In the next issue, I will talk about what some of our favorite green cleaning products are!

Fight Clutter One Shelf at a Time

Posted on April 18, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized |

organized shelfAs always,  Gretchen Rubin in her book “The Happiness Project”  has a lot of informative ideas to share.  I really liked this blog she did on fighting the relentless onslaught of clutter by methodically going shelf by shelf, then drawer by drawer, through her apartment whenever she has a few minutes of down time.

Outer order really does contribute to inner calm,  so when we take a few minutes to organize and clear out  even a little bit,  it  is such a great feeling!

Time For A Detail Cleaning!

Posted on April 11, 2011. Filed under: Kitchen Cleaning |

It’s that time of year when my thoughts turn to…Spring Cleaning!

Picture of a clean kitchen.

Yes, time to:

  • open up the windows,
  • get rid of any left over  firewood,
  • fold up the throws/afghan/blankets and closet them away,
  • wash your mattress pads and window coverings,
  • give the pets a bath,  and scrub everything down from top to bottom.

Then bring in lovely fresh flowers and bask in the glow of it all!

Obviously scrubbing everything down from top to bottom is time-consuming.  You could tackle it one room at a time
to do it methodically without getting overwhelmed.

Before you begin, assemble ALL your cleaning products into a caddy tray along with clean microfiber cleaning towels or cotton wash cloths  and work like the professionals do:   from top to bottom, one side to the other.  You should also have some boxes or bags to sort  things into as you go along.  One box for passing on to a charity and another for trash. Put the music on, set a timer for however long you have given yourself for the task and go to it!

If this just doesn’t sound like your idea of fun…no problem! Call Sponge & Sparkle and we will deliver dazzle in no time flat!  We love to do Spring Cleanings (or Detail  Cleanings as we call them) and we can even  bring in  a steam machine and/or a steam mop that will sanitize as it cleans too.

Married Couples with Cleaner Households Have More Sex!

Posted on April 4, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized |

A cleaning service may lead to a more fulfilling marriageThis is a very  interesting and well researched study about the link between cleaning house and intimacy.  It explores, among other things,  the connection between the willingness to do household tasks together as a general indicator of a symbol of shared commitment to the home and thereby to each other.  Also, it says the reward of a serene well tended home in and of itself may be conducive to intimacy.  Sharing the cost of a maid service would be doubly worth it,  in view of this study – since  someone else is doing the cleaning you have even more time for sex!!
