Give Yourself a Break

Picture of a clean room by rubenerd (flickr)Are you one of those people who will never hire a housecleaning service on a regular basis?  Maybe you  just don’t trust anyone in your home,  or don’t want to spend the money, like doing it yourself or at the least… find it endurable.

Still, you should think  about getting a professional maid service to come into  your home at least once or twice a year to do a detail cleaning.   A detail clean is just that; the details!  (Where the devil is).  It is typically a top to bottom thorough cleaning that concentrates on removing buildup of grime and dust,  especially in kitchen and bathrooms and any build up of dust throughout the home.

Sponge & Sparkle washes down doors and molding,  windowsills, baseboards, and woodwork.  We can even bring in our steam cleaner (especially good for allergy sufferers) which cleans and sanitizes without chemicals and leaves a wonderful fresh smell.

Detail cleaning is the kind of cleaning that no one has time to do anymore – it’s hard enough to just keep up with the relentless everyday  grime.  Even if you are keeping up with the cursory cleaning and things are neat and tidy,  the  deeper dirt is there – you just don’t notice because it is “undisturbed.”

You will find that after this cleaning  it is much easier to do the upkeep cleaning  and your home will stay cleaner  longer!

Hygiene Hypothesis

Posted on February 21, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized |

A too-clean environment – particularly on that  has been rubbed down with anti-bacterial sprays and wipes – can actually hamper a child’s immune system.  Known as the “hygiene hypothesis”, the argument goes that exposure to germs in actually essential to building one’s immune system – the first line of defense against allergies and asthma.

The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology recently reported a study in which children who went to daycare were 35 percent less likely to develop allergies and asthma later in life than those  who stayed home – where presumably, they were exposed to less germs and infection.

Does this information justify going on a complete cleaning strike?  Unfortunately, no.   But it does suggest a different approach to cleaning.  Ditch those anti-bacterial sprays, soaps and wipes in favor of hard working, but natural cleaners.   Sponge & Sparkle Cleaning Service uses biodegradable, non-toxic cleaning products with no petroleum solvents that have not been tested on animals.  Call  us!

Keep your home clean on a snow day

Posted on February 14, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: |

It is snowing here in Atlanta. Everything is shut down – no school, no traffic, and it is very beautiful.
As I got ready to bundle up and take my Great Pyrenees outside for a romp, I remembered a tip I read somewhere for keeping my feet dry: So before I put my feet into my boots I put them into plastic bags! I vouch that this really works, because I was out in another snow evening on Christmas Day and came back in the house with thouroughly soaked and cold feet.

Also, to help keep your home cleaner the number one suggestion I can give you is to have a really good mat at the entrances. And, if you take your shoes off inside the house (just wear slippers or socks) you will extend the life of your carpet or floors dramatically in addition to keeping everything pristine!

Are You A Customer Or An Employer??

Posted on February 7, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Do you remember the news story last year about Kobe Bryant being sued by his housekeeper?

The state of California ruled that Bryant and his wife must pay $326 a week in unemployment benefits to their former housecleaner.    The ruling affirmed a decision by an administrative law judge who found that the maid testified credibly that she was forced to quit because she was “demeaned and humiliated” by her employer.

While the story is interesting, the most important item about it is  the word  “employer”  in the judge’s verdict.    Kobe employed his housekeeper…and as a result he was forced to ACT like an employer.  In other words, he had to follow all sorts of laws and regulations that he would have been unaware of because he was an NBA basketball player!   And if, in his ignorance he did not follow those regulations, well,  he had to pay.

If  you are the employer of a housecleaner,  YOU will be liable if they fail to pay proper taxes (and they usually do )  on the money that you pay them.  If they file for disability or social security,  you will also be liable for these taxes.    If an individual or an unlicensed company worker is hurt in your home, there is a good chance that you will be sued if the cleaner is facing loss of income and/or high medical bills.  Even though he or she may be a nice person,  they probably will have no other recourse.  There are many other reasons why you place yourself at risk when hiring an individual – have you done a thorough background check on this person?   Do you even  know their home address?

When you are the CUSTOMER and you hire a reputable service, the company carries the burden of  payroll taxes, workman’s comp, and liability insurance so you don’t have to.  A  professional company will also do criminal background checks and provide ongoing training and guarantee their work

When you hire a professional service you are avoiding all these risks.   Why would you put yourself  in danger to save a few dollars?    The smart choice is to be the CUSTOMER –  not the EMPLOYER.
