Clean out Clutter!

Posted on May 31, 2010. Filed under: Clearing Clutter, Time Management |

Spring and Summer seem like natural times to clean out clutter and free up some space.  The emotional benefits of lightening up are enormous – there is a definite “Ah!”  feeling to opening a drawer or closet that you have decluttered,  especially if your previous reaction had been more “Ugh”.   I would say it contributes to happiness!

Just start small.  Pick a drawer or a shelf that has been silently taunting you and go for it.  You can even use minutes otherwise wasted – when you are on the phone or on hold, or in the kitchen waiting on the timer to ring or before you have to leave the house to pick up a child from school, etc.

Take everything out or off the space and spread it out in front of you.  This way when you see everything all at once you can eliminate more and organize more efficiently,  and you can quickly clean the surfaces with a damp cloth too.  My personal mantra is “If in doubt, throw it out”.

You will get such a positive feeling from this clutter cleanup  and feel so good when you see the results that you will be supercharged to start on your next problem area!

Easy Habits to Save Yourself Work

Posted on May 23, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Here are some easy habits that will save you some serious elbow grease later on:

(1)  place a couple of dryer sheets – even used ones will work – in the bottom of the trash can to absorb spills and odors

(2)  switch to liquid soap (Dr. Bronners Peppermint is my favorite) or glycerin bar soap because the binding agents in traditional bar soaps are one of the main causes of soap scum and contribute to clogged drains

(3)  run the bathroom exhaust fan or open the window while you shower and for about 10 minutes after to prevent mildew

(4)  line your oven with an inexpensive liner so the inevitable spills will not have to lead to use of the dreaded toxic oven cleaner

(5)  wipe down the walls and glass shower doors with a small squeegee to curb soap scum

(6)  eradicate hard water stains in toilets by pouring in a cup of  white vinegar once a month.  Let it sit overnight and then flush

Cleaning is magical!

Posted on May 17, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

As the owner of an Atlanta cleaning service, I love to clean for many reasons; the main one being that you can see immediate results from your efforts!    It’s so much like nothing more than magic.  Before:  a messy, dirty countertop then POOF! VIOLA!, a beautiful clean,  tidy countertop!  The psychic benefits are enormous.  It just feels important and good and cathartic.

There are not many things in our daily lives that are so immediate, cut and dried, black and white, like a dirty mess transformed into a sparkling delight. And then, to sweeten the deal,  there is the option to add a whole another dimension by making it smell lovely too.  Light a fragrance candle (www.thebestcandle.com) or use one of the many natural cleaning products  with orange oil or lavender or lemon!

May is National Get Caught Reading Month

Posted on May 12, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

As the owner of a local Atlanta housecleaning service you may wonder why do I spend so much time talking about reading?  Well, because I love it!  And one of the main benefits of using a cleaning service is so you have time to do the things that you love when someone else takes care of the things that you definitely do NOT love.

I think it is terrific that in France the government gives every young person between the ages of 18 and 24 a free newspaper subscription of their choice for one year.  After the year,  33% of them renew their subscriptions on their own.  This  policy has many benefits:  strengthening the ailing newspaper industry, making young people more aware, involved and discerning, more topics for interesting discussions between people and since an informed electorate is essential for a healthy democracy the democratic process is thereby enriched too.

May is National Get Caught Reading Month!

Posted on May 1, 2010. Filed under: Uncategorized |

May is national “get caught reading month”.  So do it – get caught reading!  It’s great.  I am a member of a book club and   last week we just had our monthly meeting and as usual, it was fun, lively, and interesting.  We had diverged from our usual fiction selection and branched out to read  The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin.

I loved this book; it really gave me so much insight, inspiration,  and…happiness!   The book is her account of her year-long odyssey to test out in her own life the ancient wisdom, current scientific research,  and lessons from our popular culture on how to be a happier person.  Many of her discoveries are of the  “Aha”  type.  For instance,  apparently all of us are happier doing most anything  around or with other people – even introverts!  Also, sometimes money can buy happiness, and venting bad feelings does not relieve them.  Lots of food for thought and for making our lives better.  I know it did mine.
