Clean Up the Great Indoors

Environmenalists are laboring to clean up the Great Outdoors but what about the Great Indoors?
Furniture, fabris, paint and carpet all leach volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which may cause many physical  problems.
There is a simple remedy:  Potted plants pull chemicals into their leaves and roots, where they are broken down and rendered harmless.  Two 12 to 14 inch plants in a 100 square foot room will significantly shrink VOC levels, says Bill Wolverton in his upcoming book  Plants: How They Contribute to Human Health and Well-Being.
Rubber plants, english ivy, ficus and boston fern all work  particularly well.  Instead of using soil you can use clay pebbles instead which can be up to 50 percent more effective in cleaning the air.
